HIGH POINT, N.C. -- Calvin Klein Home finally has legs, so to speak. The spare elegance that has defined the fashion designer's clothing has been translated into home products and now, furniture.
Calvin Klein Home, established in 1995, includes bed and bath items, linens, rugs and tableware. Last month, at the International Home Furnishings Market in High Point, N.C., the company officially launched its case-goods and upholstery products to complete the look.
Despite the recent economic downturn, the company believes its reputation for quality will draw consumers.
"We feel that we have designed a compelling product line with an excellent price/value relationship," said Bentley Hardwick, vice president and managing director of Calvin Klein Home. "The pieces were designed to complement our existing bedding, table top, and rug offerings and complete the Calvin Klein Home lifestyle vision."
Two furniture lines will be available in January -- Calvin Klein and The Curator Collection. The Calvin Klein line is offered in three categories: City, Weekend and Destination and will be sold in select Macy's department stores. Each category will have its own wood finish with walnut representing City, whitewash for Weekend and teak for all Destination pieces. Prices will range from $850 for a side table to about $2,600 for the canopy bed.
Though there are plenty of examples of uncluttered furniture cluttering showrooms everywhere, few have the pedigree of Calvin Klein. "Modern and timeless" was likely the mantra creative director Amy Mellen and her design team murmured as they sketched the details and edited the excess for living room, dining room, bedroom and occasional pieces.
"I believe our team has done a great job creating collections that are true to the Calvin Klein brand DNA while at the same time incorporating elements that exude warmth and comfort to appeal to a wide consumer base," President and CEO Tom Murry said.
Their efforts are represented best by the upscale Curator Collection, which embodies a Calvinistic ascetic in its brevity of form but exquisitely executed details. It is the zen perspective on opulence.
The highly polished, hand-rubbed dark walnut and ebonized finishes set off the subdued bronze hardware and leather accents. The no-frills, just-plain perfection guidelines are evident in everything from the Tuxedo sofa, to the simple silhouetted sleigh bed with upholstered natural linen, to the very clean-cut tall chest of drawers. The sleigh bed will retail for approximately $5,700.
In western Pennsylvania, Weisshouse (www.weisshouse.com) and independent retailers will carry the Curator Collection. Information: www.calvinkleininc.com/home/.
