Sunday, March 07, 2010

The Penguins won their fourth game in a row, 2-1, over the Boston Bruins today at Mellon Arena.

They are 40-22-4 through 66 games, the second-fastest in club history to have reached 40 wins. The 1995-96 Penguins got their 40th win in their 65th game.

The Penguins outshot Boston, 10-3, in a scoreless first period.

Boston opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 3:12 of the second period. Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury made an initial save, but the Bruins slapped at the puck until Blake Wheeler got it loose and poked it over the goal line.

Pascal Dupuis tied it for the Penguins, 1-1, at 8:57 after Sidney Crosby slid the puck behind the net to him. Dupuis took the puck to the right corner of the net, where Bruins' goaltender Tim Thomas was waiting for him, and batted at it repeatedly until it slid in.

The Penguins moved ahead, 2-1, when Evgeni Malkin scored from the right dot at 1:27 of the third period.

Boston center Marc Savard lay on his back for a time and was taken off the ice on a stretcher at 14:23 of the third period after he was hit by Penguins winger Matt Cooke. There was no immediate word on Savard's condition.

The Penguins play their next five games on the road, beginning Thursday at Carolina.
