Weather service warns of excessive heat this weekend
Thursday, July 22, 2010

It's probably a good idea to start planning on how to stay cool over the next few days.

The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh this morning issued a special weather statement that warns residents across the region to be prepared for extreme hot and humid conditions Friday and Saturday.

Daytime highs are expected to reach into the lower 90s and with increasing humidity levels, the heat index can reach 100 or more. The weather service advisory says residents should consider curtailing activities and drinking plenty of water. Wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothes and stay out of the sun as much as possible. Being in direct sunlight can make a person feel even 15 degrees hotter. Check on elderly and others who may be impaired by the heat and humidity.

It is extremely important to remember -- never leave anyone, particularly a child or pet, in a vehicle with its windows closed when parked in the sun. Also beware of objects in direct sun that can become hot enough to burn skin.

Expect partly cloudy skies with temperatures reaching the mid 80s today. Check out the PG's weather page for the latest conditions and forecast. Commuters also can access the updated traffic conditions.
