Friday, July 23, 2010

The city of Pittsburgh is taking the unusual step of opening two senior centers Saturday to give residents a place to escape the heat.

The Homewood and South Side centers will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday.

"For the first time ever, we are providing this weekend service for our seniors to help keep them safe, beat the heat and to send a strong message to our residents that it will be dangerously hot today and tomorrow," Mayor Luke Ravenstahl said in a statement.

The Homewood center is at 7321 Frankstown Ave., and the South Side Center is at 12th and Bingham streets. Refreshments and activities will be provided.

The temperature is expected to reach 93 on Saturday.

The centers are operating with extended hours today, closing at 7 p.m., three hours later than usual.
