Victim identified after gas well blast
Saturday, July 24, 2010

A Westmoreland County man has been identified as one of the victims of the explosion at an oil and gas well Friday in Indiana Township, the Allegheny County medical examiner said.

Kevin Henry, 46, of New Florence, and an unidentified co-worker were killed when an explosion at the well caused a fire and ripped open a 12-foot-by-8-foot oil storage tank that was flung about 70 yards from the blast site.

Investigators, including the county fire marshal and police detectives, township police, the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and the bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, have not determined the cause of the blast.

It was reported at 9:50 a.m. at a two-year-old well situated about two miles into the woods off Rich Hill Road in Indiana Township.

Autopsies conducted Saturday were inconclusive for both victims, the medical examiner said.

The second man was burned beyond recognition, and forensic investigators said they will have to rely on dental records for positive identification.

The two had been working at the site with a third man who was not injured.

Police have not released his name, but he has provided information for the investigation.

The well is one of a handful in the township owned by Huntley & Huntley Inc., a drilling company based in Monroeville.

The company in a statement posted Saturday on the Internet offered condolences to the victims' families.

The message said Huntley is conducting its own investigation even while cooperating with federal, state and local investigators.

No other injuries were reported at the site, although three of the estimated 200 first responders were treated at a nearby hospital for smoke and heat related issues.
