Tuesday, July 27, 2010

A Pittsburgh police officer was injured when his police car collided with an ambulance while responding to a call Sunday afternoon.

The accident occurred at South Aiken and Friendship avenues in the Friendship section of the city just before 5 p.m. The officer was en route to a police call in Homewood at the time of the accident, according to emergency dispatch. Accident investigators are probing the cause.

The injured officer, who was not identified, was taken to UPMC Mercy and was released by Monday afternoon.

It was not known whether the ambulance driver was injured and whether a patient was being transported in the ambulance.

The police vehicle was heavily damaged in the crash. The officer had activated his lights and sirens as he went through the intersection, police said. Also under investigation is how a camera inside the cruiser malfunctioned before the collision.
