Ex-councilman interested in vacancy

John P. Fonzo, an Irwin council member from 2006 to 2009, is a candidate to fill the remaining 41 months of Virginia DiPrimio's term on council.

Mrs. DiPrimio, 84, died July 16.

Council has until Aug. 16 to name a replacement or the appointment will be remanded to a panel of Westmoreland County Court of Common Pleas judges. Council is expected to fill the vacancy at its Aug. 11 meeting.

Mr. Fonzo, an attorney, notified borough secretary Mary S. Benko by letter last week that he would like to be considered for the vacancy.

He was council president the final two years of his term, which expired Dec. 31. He did not seek the Democratic nomination for a second term, citing "time demanding personal issues."
