Film Note: Walkers surprised by 'Abduction'
Friday, August 27, 2010

Lunchtime walkers stumbled into the path of cameras and (if they were lucky) actor Taylor Lautner Thursday afternoon at PNC Park where "Abduction" was filming.

The "Twilight" heartthrob, in a black Pirates jersey, jeans and boots, was spotted outside, listening to some instruction for a scene in the thriller about a teen who learns disturbing truths about his parents. He and his girlfriend go on the run.

Onlookers hoping to catch a glimpse of the 18-year-old were there but so were accidental tourists in the land of moviemaking. While out for afternoon strolls, they unwittingly stumbled onto the set and were promptly ordered out of the way.

"Abduction," being directed by John Singleton, will be in town until mid- or late September. "I Am Number IV," the first of the summer features to land here, has wrapped and moved to Florida while "One for the Money" expects to finish Labor Day weekend.

Galaxy454 takes prize

Traffic laws were broken, editing suites accidentally locked, one junker's life sacrificed and luxury or sporty cars wrangled, all in the name of the Pittsburgh 48 Hour Film Project.

And Thursday night, the unusually spelled and punctuated "Ali_N vs Predator" from Galaxy454 was named best film at the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater. It will advance to Filmapalooza, being held during the Miami International Film Festival in 2011.

The team, led by Adam Taylor, also shared in a $100 cash prize, computer editing software, trophy, plaque and prizes from local sponsors. Galaxy454 also won the audience award for Group C (films were clustered into three groups) and was singled out for best use of character.

All teams, working within a particular genre, had to incorporate a retired military character named Gil or Gigi Walters, a pillow as prop and the line of dialogue: "Take your time. I've got all day."

Kahmeela Adams, one of the producers of the Pittsburgh leg of this now-global competition, said most films came in at the 51/2- to 7-minute mark. As usual, some traffic laws were broken in delivery, with one team screeching in at 7:29 p.m. Aug. 15 with a minute to spare.

A first was a team that blew up a car that never would have passed inspection although other troupes incorporated such vehicles as a DeLorean, Ferrari and Lamborghini into their films. Overall, she said, "It went well, it went great."

Last night's awards ceremony culminated a nearly two-week process that started on Aug. 13. All 31 teams completed their films (although two missed the deadline) and 250 to 300 people attended each of three screenings last week of all entries, Ms. Adams said.

In brief

• A free screening of "Gasland" will be held today in Frick Park at Nicholson Street and Beechwood Boulevard.

Filmmaker Josh Fox documents what happens when a natural gas mining company offers him and his upstate New York neighbors $100,000 each for the right to drill for gas on their land. He embarks on a cross-country journey that he calls part travelogue, expose, mystery, bluegrass banjo meltdown and showdown.

The free event will open tonight with music at 7:30 p.m., including Mike Stout's rendition of his new song "The Tale of Marcellus Shale." The film will screen at 8:15 and a panel discussion starts at 10.

Mr. Fox also will appear at an event at 1 p.m. Saturday at Waynesburg Central High School. For more details on both, go to www.gaslandthemovie.com.
